Photographer task - David LaChapelle
He is best known for his commercial and fine art photography
but he is also a music video director, film director and an artist. His
photographic style has been described as “hyper-real and kitsch pop surrealism”
and his work has been called “meticulously created in a high gloss,
color-popping, hyper-realistic style” and his photos are known to “crackle with
subversive ideas, rude energy and laughter. His phots are full of juicy life.
His work refers to art history and often conveys social messages.
He was born in 1963 in United States so he is 55 years old at
the moment.
He was bullied in school for being gay and when he was 15
years old to become a busboy at studio 54 in New York City.
At the age of 17, he met Andy Warhol and hired him as a
photographer for Interview.
His first photograph was of his mother, Helga LaChapelle, on
a family vacation in Puerto Rico.
Some artists
have influenced his photography and his two favourites are the Baroque painters
Andrea Pozzo and Caravaggio. He was also influenced by Salvador Dali, Jeff
Koons, Michelango, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol.

LaChapelle's images subsequently appeared on the covers
and pages of magazines such as Details, GQ, i-D, The
New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Face, Vanity
Fair, Vogue Italia, and Vogue Paris.
He has photographed famous people such as 2 pack, Madonna,
Jay Z, Angelina Jolie, Whitney Houston, Bjork etc…
During his 30 year career as a
photographer of pop culture, David LaChapelle has shot countless celebrities,
entertainers and important icons. His ability to capture the narrative of
contemporary life is like no other in the field.
